In February 2013 H&M launched a global initiative called Garment Collecting. Customers are encouraged to bring in unwanted garments of any brand and in any condition to H&M stores in all 53 markets to be given a new life.
H&M rewards customers who bring in their garments with a 15% discount on an item of your choice per bag donated. The limit is 2 bags per customer per day.
The garments are separated in three groups:
- Rewear – clothing that can be worn again is sold as second-hand goods worldwide
- Reuse – textiles that are no longer suitable to wear and converted into other products, such as cleaning cloths
- Recycle – textiles that can’t be reused can be turned into textile fibres or used to manufacture products such as insulating materials for the auto industry
Any revenue from the Garment Collecting program is invested in technology for recycling processes in textiles and social projects. H&M partnered with I:CO and supports organizations and social projects internationally through their Charity Star initiative.
