Marcin Kobylecki has worked on computer games like “The Witcher” and “Cyberpunk 2077.” With his new project, DRKVRS, he wants to give the metaverse, which is still young, a darker fantasy feel.
Kobylecki is in charge of DRKVRS’s artistic growth along with Aleph Zero. Aleph Zero is a proof-of-stake blockchain that was released in November 2021 and is powered by the AZERO native currency.
Kobylecki was also the executive producer of “The Cathedral,” an animated short by Tomasz Bagiski that was nominated for an Oscar. He notified that his work with computer animation and special effects on games like “The Witcher” had an effect on how he made DRKVRS.
Kobyleck told Decrypt that “The Witcher,” which is a stylized game, is a good example. “To come up with a new style for these kinds of projects, we made a stylized game called DRKVRS in our world.”
The word “metaverse” is a well-known buzzword for what could be the next step for the internet and games. Crypto fans think that play-to-earn games like Axie Infinity are an important part of what the metaverse can be. But players who aren’t in the crypto community haven’t been interested in these games.
In the case of Team17, which wanted to release Ethereum NFTs based on the “Worms” video game franchise in February but was met with almost immediate backlash from fans who saw them as a cash grab at best and a Ponzi scheme at worst, some gamers have been downright hostile to the addition of digital assets.
Players can get prizes with real-world value from video games that let them earn cryptocurrencies or NFTs. NFTs are cryptographically unique tokens that show who owns a piece of content. In blockchain games, players can claim ownership of things like skins, clothes, and virtual property.
The goal of DRKVRS is to change people’s ideas that metaverse games are just platforms for making money. The goal, according to the people who started the project, is to make a game that is made by experts in the gaming industry who then use blockchain technology.
Antoni Zolciak, one of the founders of Aleph Zero, says, “With Marcin and his team’s experience, we’re excited to see what comes of it.” The point of DRKVRS is to make it seem as sad and dark as possible.
Both Ukasz Orbitowski and Jacek Dukaj are well-known Polish authors of fantasy, science fiction, and horror.
Zolciak says that DRKVRS will use two tokens: SPECK, which can be traded, and God’s Blood, which is used in the game. Aleph Zero will provide the infrastructure for transferring tokens, voting, and making NFTs.
DRKVRS plans to use a DAO to handle governance and vote on game changes (decentralized autonomous organization).
A DAO, which is sometimes called a “decentralized autonomous organization,” is a type of organization structure in which power is not centralized but instead spread out among many people. DAOs use smart contracts that are based on the blockchain, and members can use governance tokens to vote on what actions should be taken.
Zolciak says that we want to give the community the freedom to come up with their own ideas and reward the independent producers.
In DRKVRS, players go into the ancient cosmic beast Leviathan, which is said to have a long history. Players will get to know the city of Babalon (named after the Thelemic goddess). This “transhumanist dystopia” is the main way that players interact, move the story forward, and make hard moral decisions.
Zolciak says that the studio often uses the illustrations of Tomasz Bagiski, a Polish artist who worked on the movie trailers for “The Witcher” and “Cyberpunk 2077.”
He also said that the men work in a place where they can “draw the beautiful out of the gloom.” “It’s pretty much the same method.”
But Kobyleck says that gamers shouldn’t expect a pure fantasy or cyberpunk game. Instead, they should expect a mix of the two. He says “The Witcher” won’t be it. It will be different from “Cyberpunk,” and it will have monsters by Guillermo Del Toro.
Kobyleck says that “We don’t know if it will be a standalone application or will be website application. So we have to figure it out.”
