Winter Outerwear: Style Tips for Staying Warm on the Go

By Imogenl @ImogenLamport

Picture this: you're on the move, juggling work, family, and personal commitments, all while navigating icy winds and snow-covered streets. It's easy to feel like you have to choose between staying warm and looking good. But what if I told you that you can have the best of both worlds? Enter winter outwear - choose options from the world of athleisure or something more dressy, the perfect blend of comfort, functionality, and style. Let's delve into some essentials that will elevate your style game without compromising on comfort.

There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.

Layer Up with Style

When it comes to winter dressing, layering is your best friend. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable throughout the day. Opt for fabrics like merino wool or synthetic blends designed to whisk away sweat from your body, keeping you feeling fresh and cosy. Next up, envelop yourself in a snug knit sweater, providing that essential warmth needed to combat the winter chill. These insulating layers work in harmony, creating a thermal barrier that traps heat and shields you from the biting cold.

And here's a pro tip: when layering, always remember that it's easier to remove a layer if you start feeling too warm than to wish you had an extra one when you're freezing.

Elevate Your Leggings Game

Who says leggings are just reserved for the gym? Let's elevate your style game with top-notch thermal leggings boasting fun prints or textured fabrics. Why not pair thermal tights with a longline knit tunic or an oversized sweater, dress or even a denim maxi skirt? Complete the ensemble with a chic pair of knee-high boots or trendy sneakers, ensuring you glide through the day in style and comfort.

You can now also get bootcut versions which are back in fashion and great for those with curvy hips and thighs as they balance your body. Wear these with high-hip-length tops and jackets.

Understanding your body type is also crucial in finding the perfect leggings. If you have an A or X shape, opting for a style with a higher waistline provides enhanced coverage without compromising on comfort. It's all about finding that balance between style, functionality, and comfort, ensuring you feel confident and empowered every step of the way.

There are hosiery options that look like regular tights but have fleece linings that allow you to wear them to work and remain warm on the commute.

Denim Options

Jeans can be worn with a fine thermal layer underneath in the coldest weather, but are also a great option if you're spending more time inside. Denim skirts are a staple that can be worn all year round, with a thick pair of tights in winter or bare legs in summer. Knee-high boots will keep your legs warm.

Invest in Versatile Outerwear

Your winter coat is the pièce de résistance of your cold-weather wardrobe, so choose wisely. Opt for a versatile outerwear piece that seamlessly transitions from work to weekend activities. Look for tailored wool coats, quilted jackets, teddy coats or faux fur or sleek down-filled parkas in a signature colour (always a winner) or a neutral that matches your hair colour. These timeless pieces will not only keep you warm but also elevate your winter outerwear look with effortless sophistication.

Now, for your outerwear-the ultimate defence against the elements. Choose a weather-resistant coat or jacket that not only makes a bold fashion statement but also serves as your shield against cold wind, rain, and snow. It's the perfect fusion of style and functionality, ensuring you stay both chic and protected in the face of inclement weather or if the day is clear but just cold, enjoy wearing something more textured and fun such as a faux fur or teddy coat.

Play with Colour, Textures and Patterns

Winter presents a wonderful opportunity to explore a kaleidoscope of colours, textures, and patterns to infuse your outfits with visual intrigue. Why not try mixing and matching different fabrics like faux fur, shearling, and quilted nylon to create a dynamic and stylish look that captures attention effortlessly. And why stop there? Embrace bold prints like animal print, plaid, or geometric patterns to inject an extra dose of personality into your accessories or outerwear.

Now, while classic winter colours like black, navy, and grey appear to reign supreme, there's no rule saying you have to stick with tradition. Dive into the warmth and sophistication of deep reds, exuding cosiness with their rich and inviting tones, perfect for cosy sweaters, scarves, or even coats.

I have two favourite winter coats, one in turquoise the other in cobalt which both work well with so many of my outfits as these are colours I wear a lot of. Sticking with colours in your palette (particularly your signatures) really will make your coat colour more versatile. Not sure of your best colours? Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessorizing serves as the magic touch that elevates your winter athleisure ensemble from ordinary to extraordinary. Opting for statement pieces like chunky knit scarves, oversized sunglasses, or bold statement earrings injecting a burst of personality and flair into your outfit effortlessly.

Bookend your look with shoes and boots that match your hair colour for a complete look.

I painted these boots to match my now silver hair and they are such a versatile colour as they work with every outfit.

The key to selecting the perfect hat to complement your look is to ensure the hat style aligns harmoniously with the overall vibe of your outfit. Why not try a casual, sporty look effortlessly paired with a cozy beanie, or elevate a more elegant ensemble with the timeless sophistication of a beret or fedora.
