The Department consists of five Divisions: Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Colorado State Patrol (CSP), Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ), Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC), Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM).

This position resides within the The Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC).  DFPC safeguards the lives of those that live, work, learn and play in Colorado by reducing fire threats to people, property and the environment. Each of the programs described below supports the Division’s mission in various ways, including through code enforcement, wildfire preparedness and suppression, training and certification programs, public information and education, or technical assistance to local governments.

  • Wildfire Management Program – provides technical assistance to local governments and manages wildfires that exceed the capacity of local agencies.
  • Health Facility Construction and Inspection Program – ensures that licensed health facilities comply with fire and life safety codes, issues building permits, and performs inspections.
  • Public School and Junior College Construction and Inspection Program – ensures that public schools and junior colleges comply with building and fire codes by conducting plan reviews and inspections or certifying local plan reviewers and inspectors.
  • Certification Programs – administers certification programs for firefighters, hazardous material emergency responders, medical first responders, fire sprinkler fitters, and others.
  • Colorado All-Risk Incident Reporting System – administers a statewide reporting system for fires and related incidents.
  • Emergency Services Responder Education and Training – provides training for emergency service responders.
  • Center of Excellence – researches, tests, and evaluates new technologies related to aerial firefighting.
  • Fire Suppression Program – ensures that fire sprinkler systems are properly installed and maintained.
  • Colorado Fireworks Act – establishes minimum standards for the sale and use of fireworks.
  • Fire Safety in Limited Gaming Establishments – establishes minimum building and fire safety standards for limited gaming establishments.
  • Regulation of Reduced Ignition Propensity Cigarettes – enforces flammability standards on cigarettes.
  • Regulation of Fire Safety in Waste Tire Facilities – creates rules for fire safety in waste tire facilities.
About the Work Unit 
The Wildland Fire Management Section of the Division of Fire Prevention and Control provides technical assistance to local governments, assumes the management of wildfires that exceed the capacity of local governments upon the request of local authorities or when wildfires threaten to become state emergencies or disasters, and, at all times, provides for the safety of firefighters and the public.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Wildland Fire Suppression and Response

  • Works as a crewmember and work leader (as part of an engine, squad, helicopter or handcrew) in wildfire suppression. Fire suppression work includes, but is not limited to: constructing fireline utilizing hand tools; cutting and clearing vegetation utilizing power saws; performing structure protection; conducting mop up and patrol operations; assisting with burn out and backfire operations; operation of pumps; installation of hose lays and water delivery systems; driving 4 wheel drive vehicles; hauling and packing fire related equipment and supplies; and maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.
  • Responsible for providing for individual safety at all times.
  • On a limited basis, may temporarily serve as a Senior Firefighter if qualified as a Firefighter Type 1.
  • Requires basic wildland fire experience and knowledge, rudimentary skill in firefighting tasks, and the ability to recognize and communicate safety considerations and other factors (fire intensity, fuel conditions, weather observations, etc.) used by higher qualified firefighters in their decision making process.
  • Ensures equipment (i.e. fire engine, vehicles, and firefighting tools) is operational and safe.
  • Travels to wildfire incidents, severity assignments, and pre-position assignments throughout Colorado and across the nation at times.
  • Requires being on-call/available for assignments that may last for two weeks or longer. Work schedules will be expected to be flexible and modified at times to fit the need. Requires working long hours (up to 16 hours per day) in outdoor settings and performing strenuous manual labor, under extreme environmental conditions. Requires the ability to live in primitive accommodations such as temporary camps, tents, and trailers.
  • Participates in physical conditioning activities for up to one hour each day.

Hazardous Fuels and Resource Management Projects

  • Assists in the design, development, and writing of plans for various resource management projects, including but not limited to: hazardous fuels reduction projects, prescribed fire projects and natural resource management projects.
  • Requires a basic knowledge of the fuel types, forest conditions and forestry practices needed to plan and implement projects.
  • Serves as a crewmember in implementing aforementioned projects, including but not limited to: use of chainsaws and other tools for cutting and clearing vegetation, piling and disposing of treated vegetation, operation of chippers, constructing fireline using hand tools and power tools, performing ignitions and holding operations, and conducting mop up and patrol operations.
  • Requires the ability to travel from assigned location across the state for periods of up to one week or more. Requires working long hours (up to 16 hours per day) in outdoor settings and performing strenuous manual labor. Requires the ability to live in primitive accommodations such as temporary camps, tents, and trailers.
  • Travels in rotor and/or fixed-wing aircraft for detection, reconnaissance, communication, coordination, command and control purposes prior to, during, and following wildland fire and all-hazard incidents.
  • Assists with related projects such as fuels sampling and inputting fuels data.
  • Participates in physical conditioning activities for up to one hour each day.

Wildland Fire Preparedness and Support

  • Assists with the logistics and instruction of various wildfire and related trainings such as S-courses, annual refreshers, map and compass, first aid/CPR, etc.
  • Assists with Incident Qualifications System (IQS) management and data entry for state, county and local firefighters. Assist with the transfer of cooperator personnel from IQS to Resource Ordering Status System (ROSS).
  • Collects, compiles and calculates various wildland fuels and fire danger rating indices.
  • Supports and assists Regional FMOs with implementation of wildfire programs including, but not limited to, Cooperative Rate Resource Forms (CRRF), assessments, surveys, reports and data entry.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Assists with other DFPC wildfire programs as available and requested in coordination with Supervisory Firefighter and Regional FMO. This includes; aviation management, fire equipment management, fire prevention programs, and fire reimbursement.
  • Serves as a Firefighter Type 1 (Senior Firefighter) as needed and available to provide program depth, assistance to partner agencies and for individual professional development purposes.
  • Assists other DFPC programs (reports, data entry, certification tests, filing, etc.) as needed and available.
  • Responds to all-hazard incidents based upon needs, training and qualifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SUBSTITUTIONS, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT & APPEAL RIGHTS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Must have either a high school diploma and/or GED AND must be at least 18 years of age AND possess a National Incident Management System, National Wildfire Coordinating Group qualification as a Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2).

Special Requirements:

  • Must maintain an Arduous Fitness Level rating (based on National Wildfire Coordinating Group standards) throughout entire employment period. Must be able to obtain an Arduous Fitness Level rating within 1 week of hire.
  • Valid Colorado driver’s license, ability to travel to wildfire incidents, severity assignments, and pre-position assignments throughout Colorado, and across the nation at times. Assignments may last for two weeks or longer.
  • This position will be in on-call/available status through Colorado State Patrol Dispatch and Interagency Dispatch Centers for wildland fire response throughout the year.
  • Firefighters need to be familiar with and frequently use flammable liquids and solids in the performance of various prescribed fire and tactical firing tasks. This includes the preparation, implementation and storage of drip torch fuel, Aluma Gel, Phosphorus, and gunpowder.
  • Upon initial employment, individual will be required to provide a complete training file to DFPC that contains all necessary qualification documentation (course certificates, position taskbooks, personnel evaluations, and incident experience history) to demonstrate that NWCG requirements have been met.
  • This position is a public safety officer as defined by 42 U.S.C. § 3796b Sec. 1204 (9).
  • Requires successful completion of a background investigation that will include a polygraph. Applicants will also be required to successfully pass a medical exam and drug screen prior to employment.  This position is subject to ongoing random drug testing during employment.  If you have used any illegal drugs including marijuana within the last 12 months you will be disqualified from the recruitment process.

No substitution for high school diploma and/or GED.

Preferences qualifications (not required): 

  • Previous wildland fire or related experience.
  • NWCG wildfire qualifications of: Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1), Incident Commander Type (ICT5), Helicopter Crewmember (HECM), and/or Basic Faller (FAL3) or higher.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public service and community involvement.
