Now I don’t profess to have a great knowledge about wildflowers but this is due to change. They have been on my radar for sometime now but I have never really dedicated much time to get to know them better or more importantly grow them. Sarah Raven’s inspirational series (Bees, Butterflies & Blooms) a few months ago has been the catalyst and finally wildflowers have been designed into my garden.
I have inherited this rather lovely ‘Wildflowers of Britain’ book with photographs and illustrations of those that can be found in this country, along with the history of their distribution and a guide to searching for them in the countryside.
My plan is to sow a 1m strip of wildflowers across the width of the garden infront of the espalier fruit trees by the kitchen garden. I will sow a basic wildflower mix in autumn (mix yet to be decided) and then add to it as I discover more wildflowers in a hope of extending the season of interest. The benefits will be two-fold, firstly it will look beautiful and secondly it will provide a wonderful habitat for our polinators.
What’s your favorite wildflower ?
