I’m realizing this stream of reviews of non-audio described content is quite depressing. This British dark comedy landed on Netflix where they didn’t think to acquire audio description for a film with Oscar Winner Olivia Coleman and Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley. I’m fairly certain this thing probably has a UK Audio Description Track, since it probably had a decent UK release. It’s just about whether or not you care.
It is a period piece with a sizable ensemble. I had a hard time following it. beyond Coleman and Buckley, the only other vocally standout actress to me was Alicia Weir, because of the size of her role, and my familiarity with her being in Abigail and Matilda. The rest of the time, i was trying to follow the film, and figure out when this film even took place. Obviously, during a time when letter writing was a thing, and there had been “a war”. I’m guessing 1920’s, but tht’s just a ballpark. No televisions or use of phones, so the 1920’s would make it after The Great War, and line up perfectly.
However, it still doesn’t have audio description. I enjoyed Jessie Buckley, but only because she was quite sassy and relatable. Most of this film, I wasn’t having fun. Accessibility matters. I would have gladly taken a UK track.
Final Grade: Unwatchable
