WIAW: Then and Now Edition

By Marensmorsels @marentweets

Hey guys! Happy What I ate Wednesday. This is my second time at the party so I still feel like a newbie who doesn’t quite know what’s going on.

I had a really awesome idea from a reader, Katie. She said it would be really neat to see a side by side comparison between a day of my old eating habits right next to my new ones.

Such a great idea. And I knew it would be an awesome What I Ate Wednesday post.

I spent a LONG time looking through old posts searching for a whole day of how I used to eat… they don’t exist! I was shocked. I was a very spotty blogger way-back-when. So, I just decided to use a few different posts that really emphasized how I used to eat and we’ll put them together like they were a whole day. Sound good?

To read up on my un-diet, click here. I figure this post is already going to be long enough without a detailed explanation of my diet.

Breakfast

I used to only drink coffee in the morning and NOTHING else. Crazy, but I just wasn’t hungry in the morning. Now, I’m hungry in the mornings. Usually, very hungry.

I really like to get

  • 1 serving of fruit
  • whole grains
  • and I like to get some healthy fats.

I don’t always get the fats. It depends on what I’m making. Eggs… I always fry them in evoo now. And when I make oatmeal I like to use almond butter instead of peanut butter and sprinkle in some chia seeds. Load up on omega-3’s.

I also don’t drink coffee all the time anymore. I switch it up with green tea, teeccino herbal coffees and protein shakes. Coffee is awesome, but I was definitely drinking it a little excessively.

Lunch

My coworkers eat out together every day. We work in a small office so we all break at the same time and my boss (dad) treats everyone to lunch. I would always go with them.

I would try and make healthy choices a few times a week. I’d cut out the potato chips or have a salad instead of a burger.

Now, I go home for lunch a few times a week. I’m really noticing that eating less processed foods makes my body feel awesome. I might have been making a few healthy choices before but I definitely had room for improvement.

I’ve learned that eating foods that break down into simple sugars like sugar, simple carbohydrates like white bread, crackers… all these things aggravate my digestive system. So I’ve replaced all sandwich bread with whole or sprouted grain slices. I’ve cut out fried foods like french fries and I’m focusing on eating whole clean things… even when I go out with the coworkers.

I also really like to get

  • a few servings of veggies
  • maybe my second serving of healthy fat

I definitely still eat out, but I’m a little more picky with what I order.

Snacks

it’s montage time!

before…

now…

I don’t eat as many snacks as I used to. I think I’m getting more of the nutrients my body needs at meals. I have a lot less cravings.

The main thing that’s changed with snacks… less processed foods! I eat a lot of fruit, drink teas and coffees, and I stick to nutritious bars (for when I’m really hungry between meals).

Dinner

I think burritos are awesome! They’re one of my favorite foods. But eating them all the time is definitely not good for me. When I eat healthy foods I can splurge on my favorites, like burritos, and still feel awesome.

I never used to cook. Max and I ate out all the time. Now, I try and cook one meal a day. Max loves it because he loves cooking and it’s something we do together/

Making dinner is so simple and easy. I never would have guessed that there were so many recipes that are simple, don’t require a trip to the grocery store, and can be made in under 45 minutes.

Cooking dinner is such a great way to make sure I finish up my healthy guideline list. I make what I still need. I also noticed that I’m more full when I cook whole nutritious foods and don’t have as many midnight snacking episodes.

The change!

I think this looks like I made a huge change to my daily eating life. And I did. But it’s not as big as it looks. I simply changed a few things that then impacted my entire diet.

I made a little list…

  • drink hot magic lemon water every morning
  • get 2 servings of healthy fats a day
  • get 2 servings of fruit a day
  • get 2 servings of probiotics a day
  • swap simple carbs for complex ones
  • eat lots and lots of veggies
  • drink 8 8oz glasses of water a day
  • exercise at least 30 minutes
  • drink 3 servings of tea a day

When I follow this list, everything else just falls into place.

I’ve lost 15 pounds, without trying and I’m able to work out harder and more than I was before.

Tell me about you!!! I want to know…

How do you follow your healthy eating diet?

the list is key! without it I’m sunk.

are you a snacker?

I used to be, hard core! But now, I’m really not.

Would you rather see *nsync or the backstreet boys?

backstreet boys!

What did you have for breakfast today?

a mug of teeccino, a peanut butter protein shake, and an apple.
