Recently, many users have noticed that Twitter now redirects users to its login page. This prevents them from reading content without having login access. In this post, we'll look into the reasons why Twitter is not working without an account.

Before now, Twitter users could access all pages and contents without the need to log in to the website. However, in a recent move, Twitter made some changes to how its users can access the platform. These changes brought about a restriction blocking access for users who are not signed in with a registered account to the platform.

Although, it is still unknown whether this limitation is region-based or if it applies to all countries. Bear in mind that Twitter is not the only website to block access for unregistered users. Other websites and online services, such as Pinterest, Reddit, and Quora, have also added access restrictions to their platform.

This new but unexpected development has got a lot of people concerned, making them wonder why it was due to a glitch or a deliberate action from Elon Musk – the owner. In this post, we will explain the reasons why Twitter is not working without an account and give an alternative means you can use to access the website anonymously.

Why is Twitter Not Working Without an Account?

Over the years, anyone could use view tweets and search for content and people on Twitter without necessarily having an account. However, things have changed, and every visit to a Twitter page will require you to log in.

In one of his tweets on Friday, Elon Musk made some clarifications about this development. He mentioned that the change is required to improve performance and prevent third-party companies from “scraping” data and overloading Twitter's systems.

To explain further, Musk claimed that many organizations have been scraping Twitter data. This has a negative impact on user experience. Please note that data scraping is a violation of Twitter's terms and conditions, and the company has the intention to take further action by taking legal steps against the perpetrators.

Musk also added that the organizations often mask their IP addresses through proxy servers or legitimate-looking organizations. This usually makes it uneasy to trace their activities.

In summary, the use of Twitter now requires an account in a bid to fight data scraping, which is gradually becoming rampant and affecting user experience negatively.

Although the new measure in place has caused confusion among many, thinking it might be a bug. Also, many do not find it a convenient way to access Twitter, but it is a necessary approach to help maintain Twitter's integrity and performance. However, we do not know if this will only apply for a temporary moment or permanently.

How to Use Twitter Without an Account Despite the Restrictions

Interestingly, there is a way to bypass the recent restriction in place on Twitter. It involves the use of Nitter – a free and open-source front-end for Twitter that provides an alternative way to access Twitter content without ads or tracking.

To use Nitter, you only need to replace the “twitter.com” in the content URL with “nitter.it”. This way, you can view content without the need for a Twitter account.

For example, if you want to see a tweet with the following link: https://twitter.com/livetechnoid/status/1675611815420592129, you only need to replace “twitter.com” with “nitter.it” in the address. The new URL will be https://nitter.it/livetechnoid/status/1675611815420592129. The corresponding URL will let you read the tweet without any ads, tracking, or the need for an account.

Note that there are different instances you can choose from when you want to access Twitter content using Nitter. Although some of these may not work sometimes, you can find the official list of these instances and use the one you prefer.

Also, the LibRedirect browser extension is another alternative that lets you see Twitter content without an account.

Conclusion

Twitter's requesting for an account to see its content is in a bid to prevent data scraping and protect the user experience. However, it is still possible to see Twitter content without an account.

If it’s not convenient to log in to your account to see content, you can follow the alternative means provided on this page to see tweets, topics, and searches anonymously.
