Collective Protest Erupts Over Rumors Tom Hardy Has Been Cast In ‘Aladdin’ As Jafar
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… Hollyweird needs to STOP with the whitewashing. It’s happened time and time again, so that’s why were weren’t surprised to hear that Guy Ritchie, who’s set to direct the upcoming live-action version of “Aladdin,” was reportedly interested in casting Tom Hardy for the role of his villain, Jafar.
“Guy is a huge fan of Tom’s work and securing him would be a major coup,” a source told The Sun.
“There have been conversations and, although nothing is set in stone and things are subject to change, he’s certainly one of Guy’s favored choices.”
Ironically, producers promised from the beginning that they would do a diverse re-working of the project:
“When I came in to make the movie, I wanted to make a diverse version of the movie. Luckily for me Guy Ritchie has the same vision and Disney has the same vision, so we’re not here to make Prince of Persia,” producer Dan Lin told Collider in February. “We want to make a movie that’s authentic to that world.
As you would probably expect, Twitter did not react well to the news:
I just wrote up article abt Tom Hardy playing Jafar in #Aladdin. It's just a rumor, but I'll be SO angry if it ends up being true. SO angry.

The first song in Aladdin is called ARABIAN NIGHTS.

I love Tom Hardy, but him as Jafar is awful casting. Barkhad Abdi would be great for that role.

But ‘Aladdin’ lovers can rest easy because Hardy has responded to the uproar by disputing the rumors.
A spokesperson for Hardy told Standard Online: “There is no truth to this rumor.”
PHEW. Sounds like Tom didn’t want NO PROBLEMS.
