This product was a real enigma when I first saw it... is that a baked potato on the box?.. with white chocolate? Yes, indeed it is! These Hokkaido Aragiri Choco White from Meiji are made with ridged potato crisps covered in a creamy white chocolate. This type of sweet and salty snack is becoming much more common (especially overseas), and it's a combination that appeals to me a lot. I was very excited to be sent this for review by online Japanese store Candysan.
Since these are such a unique product, they're packaged halfway between crisps and chocolates, with a bag in a box. Inside the bag there are lots of ridged pieces, in all kinds of different shapes and sizes.
The immediate scent is from the vanilla notes of the creamy white chocolate, it's extremely alluring and I couldn't wait to give them a try. The sweetness of the chocolate is certainly the initial flavor too, but it's quickly followed by the saltiness of the potato. And it's not a subtle saltiness either - there is a really salty crisp hiding underneath the thick layer of chocolate! The sweet and salty combo is just perfection, with all the elements living up to my high expectations. The texture is very pleasing too, crunchy from the potato crisp, but with a smooth melt from the chocolate to finish - it all serves to create a real taste sensation.
It might sound like a really strange idea for a snack, but I found myself craving more of these white chocolate potato chips. They're quite irresistible and I will certainly be buying them in the future.
The Meiji Hokkaido Aragiri Choco White were very kindly sent to me by Candysan for review but all views are my own.
