Which country loves their cars the most? It depends on the way you look at it. If you look at it in pure numbers, China bought the most. The Chinese bought 18 million-plus new vehicles in 2011. The Americans bought a mere 12 million-plus. On the other hand, China is the most populous country in the world. It is home to more than 1.2 billion people. If you look at ratios, the Chinese bought one for every 665th person. The Americans were buying at a rate of one car for every 31st person. That means that the Americans were still buying more vehicles at a rate faster than most other countries.
Just look at this comparison. India’s population of 1.2 billion-plus bought about as many new vehicles as the UK’s population of “only” 62 million. The Indians bought 1.95 million cars and the Brits bought about 1.94 million. The UK ratio is one vehicle for every 31st person, possibly beating the Americans! The Indian ratio, on the other hand, is only one vehicle for every 615,000th person.
Brazilians are buying lots of cars these days. They rank third with over 4 million purchases. Yet they still haven’t caught up to the U.S. With more than 201 million Brazilians, the ratio of purchases to population was 1 for every 50th person.
