Canada remembers: Virtual Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa during the COVID-19 pandemic

This year's Remembrance Day marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. This year the Veteran's Week and Remembrance Day ceremonies will be anything but normal, as many are shifted to the virtual world to keep Canadian's safe from the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Remembrance Day ceremony will still be held at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, but the Royal Canadian Legion is asking citizens of the Nation's Capital to stay home and watch the ceremony on TV. There is limited space- especially when you factor in physically distancing 6-feet apart- and there will be no Veteran's parade, no Canadian Armed Forces parade, and a reduced color party.

You can watch the ceremony on most major Canadian television networks. CTV will begin its Remembrance Day broadcast at 10:30 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at approximately 10:45 a.m. The ceremony will also be broadcast on The Royal Canadian Legion website or you can watch it live on their Facebook page. There are plenty of ceremonies taking place online this year, check them out!

Canadian War Museum: The museum will host a live stream of its Remembrance Day ceremony in Memorial Hall, where sunlight shines through a single-window at 11 a.m. exactly and frames the headstone of Canada's Unknown Soldier. Visit the Canadian War Museum's website for more information.

Veteran's Health Centre: The Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre will broadcast its annual Remembrance Day ceremony live on their Facebook page, beginning at 10:40 a.m.

CBC Remembrance Day special: CBC will broadcast Remembrance Day specials on radio, television, online, and on mobile phones through the CBC News and CBC Gem apps.

Ottawa-Carleton District School Board: OCDSB will host a virtual 2020 Remembrance Day Ceremony featuring diverse student artwork and performances from across the District. School assemblies have also been moved to a virtual format. The ceremony will begin at 10:35 a.m.

My most sincere thanks to every soldier, peacekeeper, animal, and person who fought, died, sacrificed, and continues to sacrifice for my freedom and the freedom of our great nation. I value my freedom and I know that it took blood, sweat, tears, and lives to secure this privilege. True north strong and free- that is what Canada is to me. I'm so grateful to have been born in this country, but this country wouldn't be what it is today without the sacrifices made by the Canadian military. You give up your rights so I can have mine. Today, and every day, the citizens of the True North thank you, commend you and honor you for your service.

On Remembrance Day, consider donating to one of these Canadian military and veterans charities. Visit CTV News for a list of Remembrance Day ceremonies across Ontario- virtual and in person.
