Covent GardenThe exterior of The Tea House Covent Garden is reminiscence of a Japanese screen.
Black lacquer window frames form a grid on four levels – each square containing a display of teapots, cups and tea. Vermilion lettering enhances the oriental feel.
The shop has been on the same spot in Neal Street since 1982. It is good to see an independent still trading amongst the larger stores.
What I like best about The Tea House is their range of unusual teapots, tea bowls and cups at reasonable prices.
I also love the quirky look, with teapots displayed on shelves going all the way up the walls as you climb the stairs. On the tiny first floor there are more pots and tea books.
They also stock some beautiful glazed pottery, earthenware, and Japanese cast iron teapots, displayed in glass cases.
There are lots of jolly souvenir tea-tins in the shape of Big Ben, red London buses, phone boxes etc., understandable considering the central location – and tea makes a great gift.
Downstairs are shelves of tea, with an especially large choice of fruit flavours, tisane and infusions. The tea area could maybe do with a bit of a facelift, it feels a bit dated, as does the packaging. But I guess that is part of the charm.
I bought some Formosa oolong silvertip and some organic green sencha which were both good.
It is wel worth a visit to the Tea House if you are in Covent Garden.
