When to Change an Adult Diaper

Long exposure to urine and fecal matter can lead to skin infections and diaper rashes. That’s why it’s best to change an adult diaper as soon as soiling occurs and use special pH balanced cleaners, wipes, and creams. Caregivers should check on the individual every few hours, especially if the wearer lacks the mental capability of realizing that he or she needs to be changed.

Some incontinence products, like the Tena Ultra Briefs, feature a wetness indicator that shows when a brief has been soiled and needs to be changed. We also offer a special Malem Alarm, which is intended to be used in a disposable diaper and provides an audible alarm for the caregiver, not the user, like traditional bedwetting alarms. No sound or vibration comes from the unit worn on the user. This is especially helpful in a group home setting.

If you or your loved one is in a situation where a changing is not possible as soon as soiling occurs (ie. on a long plane ride or have difficult access to a sanitary restroom), make sure to use a highly absorbent product with moisture-wicking capabilities and complete odor control. Also, using a barrier cream, like the Aloe Vesta Protective Ointment, can help prevent skin breakdown and rashes.

Together, these suggestions should keep the wearer dry, comfortable, and rash-free.
