What You Need to Travel with Your Pet This Fall

By Kenin Bassart @Constantramble

With fall in the air and the holidays approaching, you may be preparing to travel with your pet soon. Pets are wonderful travel companions if you are prepared for anything to happen. Whether or not they’re emotional support animals or regular pets, you’ll need to prepare for any issues that may arise on your journey.

Here’s what you need to get ready for an amazing trip with your pet this fall.

Documents

Be sure to pack any documents and identification regarding your pet. This includes veterinarian information, ID tags, or medical history records that may be relevant. If you’re traveling out of the country, you may need to see your vet before leaving to get a certificate of good health.

In the event that your pet is registered as an Emotional Support Animal, you will need to bring their certification letter with you. Check-in with ESA Registration of America for additional information on necessary documents when traveling with an emotional support animal.

A Leash or Harness

Your pet may get overstimulated by all of the people and commotion, especially if you’re traveling in an airport or train station. You’ll want to make sure you have a leash or harness that keeps your pet comfortable and under your control.

If your pet isn’t used to being on a leash, you’ll be thankful to know they are secure nearby.

Bedding

Your pet may need extra comfort when traveling. It may be helpful to bring a blanket with a familiar scent of home to calm their nerves. Your pet may also become tired from the constant moving. When they need a nap, you’ll be glad they have a place where they’ll easily lay down instead of resisting the urge to sleep and remaining restless.

If you’re traveling with an ESA, they’ll have their own seat on the flight if you gave the airline advance notice. They’ll still be glad to have a place of their own to lay their head down when they’ve settled on the flight.

Travel Carrier

If you’re traveling anywhere outside of your own car, you’ll need a roomy travel carrier for your pet to be in. This may be something easily overlooked if you have a pet that is used to being in your lap but be sure to not forget it.
