"The global spa market was valued at US$ 88.53 Billion in 2017", according to Coherent Market Insights.
The advertisements are attractive and difficult to ignore: A tranquil setting with relaxed and attractive people, all of whom apparently achieved their beauty by partaking in the "spa" lifestyle.
In fact, from day spas to weekend spas to weeklong spa getaways, this form of "healthy" relaxation has become so popular that according to a 2006 survey by the International Spa Association (ISPA), one-quarter of all American adults (57 million people) and 4 million teenagers have visited a spa at least once.
Stress reduction and alleviation, easing aching joints and muscles, and simply feeling better about oneself are among the reasons given. Experts say the survey's results aren't surprising.
"Going to a spa is a psychologically and culturally acceptable method of getting taken care of," says NYU psychiatry professor Virginia Sadock, MD. "We can carry that sensation of being taken care of with us for a length of time, and very often it can help us manage better with stress."
Furthermore, she claims that most spa treatments include being touched, which is an important part of helping us relax and feel better.
"Physical contact is vital for our well-being, and even if it comes from a stranger, if that stranger is a professional there to pamper you, that touch will be beneficial," Sadock explains.
At least some research demonstrate that these advantages can lead to improved health. Spa use was associated to better physical and mental health, including better sleep and fewer sick days, in a survey of more than 3,300 Japanese government workers. Spa therapy was found to minimise both work absenteeism and hospitalizations in a similar study conducted using German data by researchers from Florida State University and George Mason University.
Is it Safe to Visit a Spa?
Who can forget the headlines that nearly put the cruise ship industry out of business: Hundreds of individuals have been infected with Legionnaires' disease, a potentially fatal infection that has been linked to a heated spa whirlpool bath aboard a luxury cruise liner.
