My work conference is fast approaching, only 3 weeks to go so I feel I should start getting prepared. I’ve been thinking about it for months, but now its actually time to start sorting out my suitcase and getting everything in order. I literally have no idea what to expect so I’ve decided to go with a smart wardrobe as I generally feel better about everything if I look my absolute best. Also, since my boss is hosting, and by association kinda so am I, I definitely want to make the right impression.
For inspiration, I thought I’d look to how celebs dress. I really like Victoria Beckhams style. I find it very work appropriate but unfortunately she wears hemlines which I think would be unflattering on me (lots of midi-length) so I couldn’t really take much from her clothes. I think Eva Longoria has a very good style and she always looks gorgeous.
But, without a doubt the ultimate style queen of the moment has to be Kate Middleton or Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge. Always impeccably groomed, she is also effortlessly graceful. And, being royalty she knows how to dress modestly which lends itself well to work attire. So here are some of Kates outfits which I have used as inspiration.

1) Dress/Jacket Combo
Kate wore a simple yet chic outfit consisting of a black print dress and white jacket the day before her stunning wedding. She then reworked the same style with a blue chiffon dress, and black jacket with belt and wedges the morning after the event. A smart jacket is the perfect way to be prepared for all occasions and she ties her outfits together with matching accessories such as shoes or a belt. I am not a fan of the wedges but I definitely feel a simple dress/jacket combo is a very good idea.
2) Recycle
Kate is a fan of recycling outfits, wearing many of her favourite pieces on more than one occasion. The perfect jacket and shoes could be used several times throughout the week-long conference meaning less things to pack etc.
3) Blue is the New Black
Kate is often seen in shades of blue which makes a refreshing change from just black. Its neutrality lends itself well to work conferences where a respectable, modest manner is required. Variations on the theme include the grey tones seen in the floral print dress and the structured dress with pleated detail shown here.
4) Minimal, Neutral Accesories
Even when Kate decides to be a bit more adventurous wearing brighter colours such as the pretty yellow tea dress, she avoids over-doing it by keeping the rest of her outfit simple. Nude shoes and clutch bags are a key them throughout her wardrobe with delicate jewellery. Overall, minimalism is key for a smart appearance.
5) Dress to Impress
I don’t think we’ve ever seen Kate in trousers at formal occasions. Being an awkward shape, it’s hard to find trousers that fit me well and nothing screams untidy or unprofessional like saggy, ill-fitting clothes. So, to avoid this fashion faux-pas I plan to only wear dresses also, keeping them an appropriate knee-length and high neck.
With this 5 fool-proof tips, I’m now off to do some serious shopping. I’ll make sure I post the items I buy so you can see whether I stuck to the rules adequately. Also, stay tuned for more posts about surviving conferences soon.
