The Republicans have been busy trying to scare American voters about the surge of immigrants trying to cross our southern border. They claim it's an "invasion" of criminals who will steal jobs from American citizens.
But while our immigration laws need to be updated to get a better control over the border, most of the Republican claims about the immigrants. Most are not criminals, but desperate people seeking a better life for their families. And they actually commit far fewer crimes than citizens (because they fear deportation if caught).
And they don't take jobs away from American citizens. Instead, they eagerly accept the dangerous and low-paying jobs that American citizens don't want - and many U.S. companies need those immigrants to fill jobs others don't want.
But perhaps the biggest thing Republicans won't tell you is that the surge in immigration would be very good for the economy. Most of the money earned by immigrants will be spent in this country, and they do pay taxes.
According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, between 2023 and 2034 the GDP will rise by about $7 trillion dollars thanks to the new immigrants - and they will increase the government tax revenues by about $1 trillion (and that doesn't include the property and sales tax increases for states and cities).
They are going to be a huge boon to the U.S. economy.
