Which AC Unit for Renters Saves More?

Many Texas renters trying to save money are wondering if the a window AC unit or the newer portable type are the best deal. We’ve dug into the details to find out what you need to know to make the best choice..

If you rent an older home, chances are the central AC isn’t balanced. And your landlord might not want to go through the expense of having this service done. You may feel stuck, but you have options. You could lower the indoor temperature so that your warmest room is comfortable. But you don’t have to! Try portable AC units or window units. You won’t waste Texas electricity freezing in some rooms while boiling in others. But which AC unit is the best deal if you rent?

Sure, these small AC units can help bring your power use back to normal usage for a home. You just need to know a few quick facts. And then, you’ll be ready to compare units and pick the best one for your situation.

Which AC Unit: Portable Vs Window

Portable AC units and window units perform the same basic function – they cool a small space, usually one room. All window units vent outdoors, and most portable units do, too. The window units affix to a window and remain in place. But the portable AC unit has more flexibility. You can move it from room to room with minimal effort.

Window units have EnergyStar ratings which helps you determine how energy efficient each product is. But, when it comes to portable AC units, be careful when you shop. They currently do not have EnergyStar ratings. However, the Department of Energy has approved standards for them that go into effect January 10, 2025.

When comparing units, look for the number “BTU ASHRAE,” “BTU DOE,” or just “BTU”. This number covers the amount of BTUs of cooling output. That’s important when you consider the room you want to cool. Check out this BTU calculator to figure out what size AC unit you need. Most online resources tell you a small bedroom needs about 5,000 BTUs. But if you’re in a hot part of Texas, boost that figure by a few thousand.

EnergyStar Window Units

You can scour the EnergyStar Certified Room ACs to find all kinds of great products. The brand Midea pops up frequently. They have four models that show up in search results filtered for the most efficient units at 8,000 BTUs. The Keystone KSTAW08INV-HC and Honeywell HAC-8I also appear. Key differences among the products include whether the unit can also heat and if the unit comes with a supporting bracket. The most efficient Midea models use an estimated 375 kWh of power per year. And that’s great for your electric bill!

Is There an Energy Efficient Portable AC Unit?

Since portable AC units do not have EnergyStar ratings, your best bet is to check the yellow Energy Guide tag on each product. The Frigidaire FHPC082AC1 rates best among several consumer buying guides in the 8,000 BTU range. Midea and Black+Decker also have models frequently appearing in energy efficient product lists.
