What is Tor? How Tor Works ?

The Onion or Tor router is a network that allows a user to remain anonymous on the internet and get rid of any possible surveillance, location tracking, etc. while using the internet. We can access the Tor network using a modified Mozilla Firefox ESR web browser.

Tor allows a person to browse the web anonymously while concealing the user's real identity. It protects the user from any traffic analysis and network spying.

Tor is perhaps the most popular and secure option available for anonymous internet connectivity. To reduce confusion, we're talking about the Tor network here, not the web browser, which is used to access it.

Tor history

Tor uses the principle of " onion routing, " which was developed by Paul Syverson, Michael G. Reed, and David Goldschlag at the United States Naval Research Laboratory in the 1990s. The alpha version of Tor, called "The Onion Routing Project" or simply TOR Project, was developed by Roger Dingledine and Nick Mathewson; it was launched on September 20, 2002. Further developments were carried out under the financial roof of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).

The Tor Project Inc. is a non-profit organization that currently maintains Tor and is responsible for its development. It received funds mainly from the US government, and additional support from the Swedish government and various NGOs and individual sponsors.

How does Tor work?

The answer to how to work is quite simple. Tor uses the concept of the "onion routing" method in which user data is first encrypted and then transferred through various relays present in the Tor network. Thus, it creates multi-layered encryption (layers like an onion) and protects the identity of the user.

A layer of encryption is decrypted with each successive Tor relay, and the remaining data is transmitted to any random relay until it reaches its destination server. For the destination server, the last Tor node / output relay appears as the origin of the data. It is therefore difficult to trace the identity of the user or the server by any surveillance system acting as an intermediary.

In addition to providing anonymity to stand-alone users, Tor may also provide anonymity to websites and servers in the form of Tor Hidden Services. Additionally, P2P applications like BitTorrent can be configured to use the Tor network and download torrent files.

Controversies and influence

People often praise Tor for the anonymity and privacy it offers to users who want to circumvent censorship, who are abused and traumatized by stalkers, and social activists who fear arrest by authorities. Sometimes it is also used by different security agencies to share confidential information.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden used Tor to leak information about PRISM to the Guardian and the Washington Post.

However, the whole story is not good, good. Tor faces criticism for the reason that it acts as a medium for different illegal activities such as data breach, drug dealing, gambling, being at home on dark websites. Tor is also used by criminal minds to communicate over the Internet while keeping their identities hidden, making it difficult for security agencies to find them.

The United States National Security Agency (NSA) has called Tor the "King of Highly Secure, Low Latency Internet Anonymity." And he received similar comments from BusinessWeek magazine, "perhaps the most effective way to defeat the online surveillance efforts of intelligence agencies around the world."

Another speculation made is that Tor is taking its funding from the US government, which may lead to the hypothesis that the NSA may have compromised the identity of individual Tor users. However, former Tor executive director Andrew Lewman has rejected any confederation with the NSA.

Is Tor Safe?

Various allegations have been made about compromising Tor's anonymity and security from time to time. The most famous was the Bad Apple Attack, in which the researchers claimed to have identified around 10k IP addresses of active BitTorrent users connected via Tor.

The Heartbleed bug was the cause of another major compromise in April 2014, which shut down the Tor network for several days.

Traffic fingerprints is a method used to analyze web traffic by analyzing patterns, responses, and packets in a particular direction. This technique can be used to attack the Tor network by having the attacker's computer act as the guardian.

The main vulnerability was found at its exit points, where the level of security is very low compared to the rest of the Tor network.

What is Tor Browser?

Tor Project Inc. released Tor Browser, which is a modification of an Extended Support Release (ESR) version of the Mozilla Firefox browser. The browser is portable so that it can be used from external media and also reduces the hassle of installation.

Tor Browser deletes browsing history and cookies after each use, reducing the risk of cookie tracking. We can configure SOCKS (Socket Secure) based applications to use the Tor network by configuring them with a loopback address.

It is also known as dark web browser because it allows users to browse so called dark websites accessible on normal web.

How to install Tor browser on Windows 10/7/8?

  1. Run the Tor browser setup.
  2. Choose the desired language.
  3. In the next window, choose the destination folder. Using Tor would be easy if you chose the desktop as your destination.
  4. Click on Install.

Tor setup will create a folder named Tor Browser on your desktop. Open the folder and run the shortcut file to use Tor Browser.

Should I be using Tor?

Tor has proven to be a great medium for a safe, secure, and anonymous web presence accessible to a user at no cost. The developers of Tor had no intention of becoming a hotbed of illegal activity, but malicious people took advantage of Tor for their benefits such as selling illegal stuff on dark websites. The Tor Project led to an optimistic approach to censorship and the unattended internet.

You can use Tor if you want to hide your identity on the web or access certain blocked websites in your area. But avoid doing anything that is above the law because nothing is foolproof and they can always catch you. Additionally, accessing your social media accounts through Tor may reveal your identity.
