What Is Post Abortion?

Post abortion is what happens after you have an abortion

Once you are ready to the hospital/clinic you return home to rest. It is advisable that you refrain from using tampons and instead use sanitary towels. You may bleed heavily so thick and high absorbent towels are the best choice.

You are able to take both a shower and bath as normal but if you have been given general anaesthetic then make sure you have someone with you.

The physical effects after an abortion will widely depend upon the method of abortion you have had.

Many women worry about the loss of blood clots and these can appear to be very large; there is normally no need to worry if the blood loss is similar to that of a heavy period.

You will have been given a number to contact someone if you have any questions post abortion. Please use this number; they are there to help and to answer any worries you may have.

If the bleeding continues heavily after the abortion and you become worried or you soak up three or more towels in the period of an hour then contact the hospital/clinic or go to A&E.

Post abortion pain is likened to those pains experienced during a period; these cramps can be relieved by taking normal painkillers. A warm bath and a hot water bottle may ease some of your discomfort.

If you are struggling emotionally to come to terms with any post abortion feelings, please use the number given to you and ask to speak to the abortion councillor, they are specifically trained in dealing with the very feelings you are experiencing. They can and will help.

Additional information can be found in the treatment leaflet you will be given.

If you have been prescribed antibiotics it is very important that you finish the stated dose to prevent any infection.
