In the past, illegally making and distributing copies of a certain work was difficult – the high costs of printing and needing to physically sell said copies made this practice an outlier. Not so nowadays, when anyone can make (and sell) as many digital reproductions as they want, free of charge, and share them with others. Enforcing copyright laws gets troublesome when dealing with parties in other countries and accountability is near impossible to enforce. Copy protection software that uses DRM controls can help stop copying and sharing of digital content by locking use to devices and enforcing restrictions over how content can be used.
