“The CBD oil seals moisture in your lips with a well-made CBD lip balm, preventing them from becoming dry or flaky,” says Gretchen Frieling, MD, a licensed triple-board dermatopathologist.
What is CBD?
In virtually any substance imaginable, you can find CBD. It often serves a practical function (such as showering or muscle soreness), and sometimes it is more of a marketing trick (looking at you, CBD leggings). But experts believe that the advantages of CBD lip balm are legit, and it might be worth slathering on when your lips get extra dry this winter.
Why is CBD used in Lip Balm?
CBD extract, when used in a lip balm, acts to moisturize dry, damaged lips. Claudia Mata, co-founder of Vertly, states, ”CBD is really nourishing and has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe chapped skin.” CBD is another top hydration candidate, just like the most dermatologist-recommended ingredient for healing chapped lips (beeswax!).
By functioning as an antibacterial and an antioxidant, it achieves this. Dr. Frieling, for instance, points to a study showing that CBD contains antibacterial compounds that help protect your lips. “CBD can help the skin stabilize free radicals and [better protect itself from] over-exposure to the components,” she says. “It can also help reduce redness and irritation around the area of the lip, and can be helpful if you have cold sores, allergies, or lip inflammation from a dehydrated epidermis.”
It is necessary to ensure that the item has the correct ingredient in its formula when shopping for a CBD-spiked lip balm to add to your collection. “The benefits of CBD products depend on how much of the composition of the mixture consists of CBD and how much the CBD presence is played out by the marketing,” warns Dr. Frieling. Most of this has to do with ambiguous labeling of goods that mix hemp oil and CBD oil (cannabis sativa oil, for example is just hemp oil). Hemp seed oil has hydrating properties and is cold-pressed from seeds, but CBD oil contains cannabinoid active compounds that have anti-inflammatory benefits.
Dr. Frieling says there are three common terms to search for on the label to know that you get the maximum number of advantages: isolate, broad-spectrum, and full-spectrum. “Three of the [CBD] terms used are isolate, which means that the product contains pure CBD without any other cannabinoid or additive; full-spectrum, which refers to a product containing all parts of the cannabis plant plus CBD; and broad-spectrum, which is similar to full-spectrum but has different trace THC levels,” she says.
CBD is both a powerful antioxidant and antibacterial compound, which makes it a helpful agent in preventing infection and discomfort in broken skin conditions.
CBD Lip Balm Effects
CBD is both an active antioxidant and an antibacterial drug, making it a beneficial agent in the prevention of infection and irritation in conditions of broken skin.
In fact, a recent study showed that CBD’s antibacterial properties function as a protective agent, keeping our lips safe and protected from cold or warm environments from over-exposure. Filled with a vitamin A, C and E nutrient-dense structure, CBD lip balm provides the lips with a healthy glow and battles the natural aging process.
It is useful to consider the common causes of dry lips until we can get into the effects of the benefits of CBD on chapped lips.
External factors such as severe weather conditions also trigger dry lips (sun exposure, extreme cold, wind). Other lifestyle factors can contribute to irritated lips, such as the habit of regular lip-licking, dehydration and medication.
CBD is a compound derived from hemp which communicates with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). Via a complex network of neurotransmitters and receptors, the ECS is tasked with maintaining homeostasis (balance) within the body. The skin in our integumentary system is the largest organ. It protects us from our external world, helps to control the temperature of our internal body, and controls certain functions of hormones. There are wide concentrations of cannabinoid receptors inside the epidermis (top layers of the skin) that may interact with CBD. Hence, CBD Lip Balm’s effects range from smoothening the lips to protecting it from harsh environment.
CBD Lip Balm Benefits
Antibacterial
Did you know that CBD acts as a strong stabilizing agent?
Our bodies contain free radicals, unstable cells which destroy the healthy cells of our body. By helping to neutralize and regulate free radicals, CBD lip balm helps our skin, which protects our lips in turn. This effect occurs because of the natural antibacterial properties of CBD, which better support our lips against infection, bacteria, and irritation.
Improves Plumpness
For the last couple of years, having perfect, plump lips has been a major beauty trend.
Everyone should admit that the mouth and smile are one of the first places we look when we meet someone, whether you’re a male or a female, and having healthy lips adds to a better first impression.
So if you’re trying to improve the natural beauty of your lip, but don’t want to get pricey cosmetic injections, you may be the right choice for CBD lip balm. By locking in moisture and functioning to increase appearance and plumpness, the CBD oil in CBD lip balm beautifies our lips.
Protects From Damage
A very thin layer of skin covers the lips and it is unusual that we protect this skin when we step out into the sun on the beach for a day or when we hit the ski slopes. Our lips are also at an exceptionally high risk of suffering from the detrimental effects of sun exposure: premature aging, cracking, drying, and color pigmentation.
Fortunately, CBD antioxidants may help revitalize lips that have endured the harmful effects of exposure to the sun. Sometimes mixed with CBD extract, hemp oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 as well as plentiful nutrients such as vitamins A, E, B and D, all of which are known for their ability to help heal and revitalize the skin.
Promotes Healthy Inflammatory Function
The most debated advantage of CBD is its ability to help promote healthy inflammatory activity, which is why many individuals use CBD for pain relief. The chapped lips turn red, burn and tingle. The soothing properties of CBD soothe chapped lips, cold sores, or sun-exposed lips and, by contributing to healthy inflammatory activity, calm the painful pain that comes with it.
A Good Moisturizer
Did you know that our lips don’t have oil producing glands? It’s completely up to us when it comes to moisturizing and covering our lips.
Some factors, including genetics, diet and how much water you drink on a regular basis, contribute to the softness and moisture of your lips. However, CBD can help by offering hydration and locking in moisture if you feel you are checking every box and still struggling with uncomfortably dry or cracked lips. With different moisturizing ingredients, we developed our CBD balm to maximize the moisturizing effect of CBD: beeswax, avocado oil, and more.
How Does It Work?
No doubt, there are plenty of CBD Lip Balm benefits on the internet. But, is it wise to use something without getting to know its working procedure? Absolutely, not.
The CBD compound is first harvested in a condensed form from hemp and then applied to a highly moisturizing formula for lip balm.
It works to add moisture back into the dehydrated skin and form a protective layer on the lips alongside moisturizing ingredients such as hemp seed oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, or shea butter.
Since there are cannabinoid receptors in the skin, in order to exert its effects, CBD does not need to reach the bloodstream through eating or inhalation. The interaction of the CBD with the ECS is subtle, but intense. CBD can enhance the redness and irritation of the skin and help relieve the discomfort of broken skin.
Will This Lip Balm Get Me High?
Both plant species and derivatives, including hemp and cannabidiol, have been considered contraband for several years. Luckily, times are shifting, and with it, the view of the general public. This, in fact, resulted in a double-take on their once zero-tolerance rules on all things cannabis by politicians. The government of the United States re-authorized the Agriculture Act or Farm Bill in 2018. The current legislation specifies that hemp is federally legal as long as it contains no more than 0.3% dry weight of THC. So are any and all hemp by-products, as they conform to the restriction of THC. CBD was used. The industry is seeing a higher than ever growth in revenue thanks to this law. It turns out that people only want to be told that it was absolutely safe to use cannabis, or in this case, hemp, lawfully.
But what was the explanation for the limitation on THC? To put it plainly, indeed, THC is psychoactive, but only in great amounts. A small number, such as less than 0.3%, will not get you high or anywhere near it. So is CBD lip balm going to get you high? As long as tetrahydrocannabinol is tiny, it is unable to affect you in this way.
