My blood pressure creeps up a couple more digits with every headline about benefits scroungers and “getting Britain back to work”. As Laurie Penny writes in The New Statesman

“In a time of soaring joblessness, encouraging an underpaid or unemployed person to seek work by removing their benefits is rather like encouraging a desert traveler to find an oasis by setting them on fire. You cannot simply bully people into jobs that aren’t there.”
