Earlier today, Prince William and Kate welcomed their first son into the world — a boy who, thanks to the internet, is an international celebrity only hours  after his birth. As the third in the line of succession and already a Prince himself, this child has a media circus surrounding him that will follow him his entire life.

There is lots of speculation from his name to what the royal nursery will look like. Esteemed designers in England were commissioned basically to make guesses. Some are charming like this rendition from Christopher Chanond.

But I think the more important question is what the royal family will be like. Princess Diana was beloved world wide because she brought an authenticity and caring into a family that has been perceived as cold and distant.

Though still raised in a formal home and a family laden with obligations both perceived and real William and his brother Harry were allowed a semblance of a childhood.

In choosing Kate, who is known for being caring and down to earth while still carrying herself with grace, Prince William seemed to strike a balance between  someone who can fit into the traditions he believes in but will bring the warmth and love he experienced from his own mother.

Previous generations of Royals were perhaps judged too harshly, they followed the rules without question. But there is little doubt Charles was raised by distant parents. However, if we look back just a couple of generations in our own families we will likely find more formality and rules and the world wasn’t even watching us.

The consensus of many royal biographers (some authorized, some not) seems to be that Queen Elizabeth raised her children in the way she was raised. In a manner that would best train them for their responsibilities in life.

Diana broke that pattern and in the spirit of Princess Diana’s own parenting style, Kate has taken an active role in planning her baby’s nursery. Up until June she could be seen around England, shopping for fabrics and furniture. The family will first live at Nottingham Cottage where they’ll build a temporary nursery, (complete with the Moses Basket she purchased below) but soon they’ll move in full time to an ‘apartment’ in Kensington Palace. ‘Apartment’, because this massive but segregated area of the palace still features a private garden and takes up half the Clock Tower wing of the palace.

This tiny new future king of England may grow up behind palace gates, but I, for one, believe he will grow up in a “home” in the true sense of the word.

This new family begins their journey like so many others; glowing with pride as they hold, touch and love each other. May every baby born today be so lucky.
