Weekly Marketing Skinny • July 12, 2014

Posted on the 12 July 2014 by Ana Hoffman @AnaTrafficCafe

Don’t have the time to read all the marketing news, blog posts, announcements, and other content related to SEO/social media/online marketing published each week?

I’ve got you covered.

I sift through trillions (well, hundreds) of online publications to stay on top of marketing news that might affect your online business.

Here’s what stood out in this week’s marketing news – in a new format (no Google+ embeds, which were slowing down the site significantly); let me know if you like this one better.

SEO

Definitely, one of the essential SEO posts of the week: Google has completely rewritten the Quality Ratings Guidelines, the resource that their team of quality raters uses to rate websites for Google – it’s a huge document, but you can find my Skinny Notes on it here. Also, even though the Guide has always been kept hush-hush, it was just a matter of time before it was leaked; you can find the link here – makes it for an interesting weekend read.

Google Webmaster Blog redesigned with an updated and cleaner look and make it work better on mobile devices.

By the way, you should share this post right now before you forget – much appreciated!

Social Media

Twitter updates Analytics dashboard with engagement numbers (and they are NOT good). Users with access to the Analytics dashboard —advertisers, Twitter Card publishers and verified users — are now able to see how many times each of their tweets has been viewed on Twitter’s Android or iOS apps or on Twitter.com.

Facebook ‘Mood’ Study? You Haven’t seen nothing yet: the U.S. military just revealed numerous studies on Facebook & Twitter data – a large research project funded by the Defense Department’s military research department (AKA Darpa) that tested how people connect, and how ideas are spread, on social sites including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Kickstarter.

More Facebook Mood Study backlash: The FTC has received a complaint from Electronic Privacy Information Center which seeks to have the world’s largest social network sanctioned for their recent emotion manipulation study. It wants the FTC to force Facebook to make the algorithm public that controls what users see in their News Feeds. Fat chance, needless to say.

Stop using Facebook for 99 days to test “how life without Facebook impacts user happiness.” – this experiment is the brainchild of Just, a creative communications agency based in The Netherlands. If you are an average Facebook user, you’ll have an extra 28 hours over the three months to spend on other matters. Go hiking, learn a new skill, hang out with friends and family (offline).

Pinterest introduced their new follow button for your website – the new Follow button will pop up a small dialog with a preview of your account’s latest Pins and your visitors won’t ever have to leave your website to follow you.

CIA’s first tweet a month ago was “We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.” As you would expect, it didn’t run the most responsive Twitter account, but to celebrate their first monthaversary, @CIA sent a thank you tweet and some borderline funny answers to FAQs.

Meet Sobrr, a new social network that erases everything after 24 hours. Like other ideas worth pursuing, Sobrr was forged in the aftermath of a Vegas bachelor party – surprise, surprise…

Marketing This & That

It’s rare to get one Google co-founder to speak publicly, let alone both at the same time. However, Vinod Khosla managed to do just that: get both Google co-founders to reveal their thoughts on everything from novel government policies to the future of technology.

Google has released version 10.5 of the AdWords Editor. In this latest version, you can download your product groups, upload and check changes, make bulk edits, and perform other time-saving tasks across your Shopping campaigns, online and offline, + more.

The new domain extension, .GOP, run by the Republican Party itself, is willing to let you call them crooks, but it will cost you $250 or more. How much more? Depends of how potentially offensive the domain name is.

Marketing Quote of the Week

Earning links is easy: All You Have to Do Is Say Something Different – as simple (and complicated) as that. That’s exactly what +Michael Martinez‘ point is in his recent Why It Is Always Easy to Earn Links for Any Website post http://tgcafe.it/1raZ6xD
