Weekend Box Office: Monsters University 2nd Best Pixar Ever

1) Monsters University- 81.1M weekend, 81.1M Total

Monsters University became the 2nd highest opening Pixar film of all time, behind 2010′s Toy Story 3, which opened with 110.3M. The first Monsters Inc managed a then impressive 62.5 million in 2001. The film has made 136M worldwide so far, and looks to be virtually unstoppable with a coveted A cinemascore from audiences. It won’t see competition for two weeks, when Despicable Me 2 opens. That will probably also be the weekend it crosses the 200M mark.

2) World War Z- 66.0 Weekend, 66.0 Total

Surpassing every bar set for it, Brad Pitt’s WWZ ended up being the biggest surprise of the weekend. It even beat Man of Steel (by a lot). Originally, the studio was expecting 45M. Thursday’s numbers had people upping that projection to 55M. Friday’s numbers had some people saying “OK, maybe 60M.” After Saturday’s numbers, they expect 66M from a film originally expected to only do 45, and possibly even be in third place. That’s great for a film that had a troubled film shoot, with a completely reshot ending, and yet still managed to receive a B+ cinemascore from audiences. The big question now is, will there be a sequel, or is this a one-off like Inception? World War Z has made 112M worldwide to date.

3) Man Of Steel- 41.2 Weekend, 209.8 Total

Crumbling a bit from its towering opening last week (65%!), Superman had to settle for third place this week. However, good news is that it has made 398.3M worldwide so far, slaying it overseas. Man Of Steel’s legs should stabilize a bit more next week, even with the entry of White House Down. White House Down is tracking around 40M for an opening, so it shouldn’t completely destroy Man Of Steel the way World War Z did.

4) This Is The End- 13M Weekend, 57.4 Total

This Is The End proved that it has legs, sliding only 37% from last week. Although, it arguably had no new competition, as the other three films aren’t considered ‘comedies’. It will have to face The Heat next weekend, but it has already surpassed its budget anyway. Comedies typically don’t do well overseas, so this movie will have to do most of the damage domestically. It won’t break 100M, but it might get to around 85M with decent legs.

5) Now You See Me- 7.8M Weekend, 94.4M Total

Now, this film has excellent legs. And it will definitely pass 100M. Worldwide total so far: 134.4M.

6) Fast and Furious 6- 4.8M Weekend, 228.4 Total

7) The Purge- 3.3M Weekend, 59.4 Total

8) The Internship- 3,3M Weekend, 38.3 Total

9) Star Trek Into Darkness- 3.0M Weekend, 216.6 Total

10) Iron Man 3- 2.1M Weekend, 403.1 Total

11) The Bling Ring- 2.0M Weekend, 2.3 Total

12) Epic- 1.7M Weekend, 100.9 Total

13) Before Midnight- 0.9 Weekend, 4.6 Total
