Weekend Box Office: ’300′ Slays ‘Mr. Peabody’

1) 300: Rise Of An Empire- 45.0M Weekend, 45.0M Total

300 was the film everyone was talking about this weekend, as the film landed an excellent 12,979PSA. 300 will face direct competition next weekend with Need For Speed, which is going after the male demographic hardcore.

2) Mr Peabody and Sherman- 32.2M Weekend, 32.2M Total

We live in a strange world when 32.2M in March is considered disappointing. That’s how high the expectations are for Dreamworks Animated films, and since Mr Peabody opened on the lower end of their slate, it is somehow a disappointment. Consider the fact that The Lego Movie made almost 11M this weekend, and Frozen made another 3M, and you would have your average Dreamworks opening.

3) Non Stop- 15.8M Weekend, 52.5M Total

The Liam Neeson thriller dipped 45% in week 2, even when facing 300 as competition. Not bad.

4) The Lego Movie- 10.9M Weekend, 224.8M Total

The Lego Movie had its harshest drop to date, falling 47% against Mr Peabody and Sherman.

5) Son Of God- 10.3M Weekend, 41.8M Total

Son Of God had a big drop of 59.5%, the largest drop in the Top 10, and the largest until Pompeii (which was 13th this week, but also lost 1,000 screens to contribute to the percentage drop). Still, 41.8M for a rerelease isn’t shabby.

6) The Monuments Men- 3.0M Weekend, 70.5M Total

7) 3 Days To Kill- 3.0M Weekend, 25.5M Total

8) Frozen- 2.9M Weekend, 392.9M Total

9) 12 Years A Slave- 2.1M Weekend, 53.0M Total

10) Ride Along- 2.0M Weekend, 129.9M Total

11) Robocop- 2.0M Weekend, 54.7M Total

Robocop (the remake) has now officially outgrossed Robocop (the original) which made 53.4M total. Granted, this was in 1987, and ticket prices have increased dramatically since then.

17) The Grand Budapest Hotel- 0.8M Weekend, 0.8M Total

Wes Anderson’s newest film made 811K on 4 screens for a whopping 202K per screen average. It is the 9th highest per screen average for an opening weekend of all time. 7 of those films are Disney films, by the way, and the 8th film is Red State, which opened on 1 screen and made 204K off of all the crazy Kevin Smith hype.
