A father told his three sons when he sent them to the university: “I believe it’s my duty to provide you with the best possible education, and you do not owe me anything for that. However, as a token of your appreciation for all that I’ve done for you, I ask each of you to put $1,000 into my casket when I die.”
And so it happened. The sons were successful in their chosen professions and did well financially — one was a doctor, the other a financial planner, and the third a lawyer.
Eventually, the father became ill and passed away. Seeing their father in the casket, the sons remembered his request.
First, the doctor put ten $100 bills into the casket.
Then the financial planner also put $1,000 in the casket.
Finally, it was the heartbroken lawyer’s turn. He dipped into his pocket, took out his checkbook, wrote a check for $3,000, put it into his father’s casket, and took the $2,000 cash.
He later went on to become a member of Congress.
