Vibrancy and customs are part and parcel Indian weddings; they are steeped with traditions while opening up to western customs of cake cutting and DJ parties. The following post takes a quick look at the weddings in various cities across the country.

Weddings in India are definitely a grand affair; moreover the myriad culture makes it all the more special and enticing. From Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Assam to Ahmedabad, Indian weddings are all about a riot of colours. Whether it is about a bride(Bridal Dresses) in north clad in bright red lehenga or a Malayali bride draped in a simple white cotton Onam sari—Indian weddings are always full of customs and rituals.

North and the East

Though, every Indian wedding is steeped in traditions like the exchange of garlands or the mangalsutra, but modernization has brought about a lot many changes in the recent past; however, certain Indian cities have some or the other idiosyncrasies associated with it. For example weddings in Delhi are full of pomp and pleasure and spending several million of rupees; Since Delhi’s population is highly dominated by Punjabis and Haryanvis, so mixes of these two cultures are quite popular in their weddings; so in most weddings in Delhi you will find customs those are generally practiced in north-Indian weddings; for example like in a Punjabi wedding ‘roka’ or an engagement is held that is generally evident in weddings in Delhi. This is followed by the exchange of garland or popularly known as ‘varmala’. On the other hand, in the eastern cities of Kolkata and Bhubaneswar, marriages take place as per the traditions prevalent there. Bengali and Oriya customs are usually most prevalent in the weddings hell across Kolkata. Nonetheless, since Kolkata is home to a huge number of Bihari and Marwari populations, weddings in these traditions are also very relevant in Kolkata. From lavish Marwari weddings to simple Bihari or Bengali weddings are but stereotypical to the states of eastern India.

West and Down South

If we move to the Western Ghats, Mumbai and Gujarat offer a very colourful wedding tradition. Mumbai, being highly cosmopolitan, offers a wide range of weddings. From the who’s who of the entertainment industry to big shot business tycoons, to even simple common people – Mumbai’s wedding platter has loads to offer. This also comes with the rich traditional Marathi culture where brides are often seen clad in a traditional Marathi saree on the D-Day of their wedding. This is not all; the percentage of Parsis in Mumbai also contributes to the great multiculturalism prevalent in the weddings of Mumbai.

If we move down south a little, the cities of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and Trivandrum (Kerala) offer a different picture of weddings in Indian cities. For example, if Kanjeevaram sarees are a favorite at a Tamil wedding, then Onam sarees take away the credits at a Malayali wedding.

Whatever, picture that an Indian wedding presents, it goes without saying that modernization has forayed in big time. DJ parties and wedding cakes have become a common scenario in Indian weddings these days with traditions and customs till date retaining their foothold.
