Read it.

And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.

In a wet public car park

I was totally gripped by this 2014 young adult book about a beautiful, rich family and the summers they spent on their private island. I ended up turning the last page with tears in my eyes in a public car park as I just had to know what happened. It’s told though the eyes of granddaughter Cadence who perfectly encapsulates teen love, drama and angst. I loved her way of describing people ‘sugar, curiosity and rain’ and her retellings of various fairy tales.

Don’t be fooled though, it isn’t another (eyeroll) teen love story. Greed and its destructive forces are examined as well as racism and class. The book makes no secret of the fact it has a surprise ending and even knowing this I didn’t guess. But boy, what a sucker punch! You want to go right back to the start and re-read. And that’s just what I might do..

PS there is a prequel coming out in May – Get your pre-orders in now!!!!
