Glasgow's electro-pop is the 'scene' that just keeps on giving. Early this summer Easy by duo Lilac Pin, roared across the blogosphere and airwaves with its innotive sounds and melodic vocals. So who are Lilac Pin, and what can we expect next? Sound like questions that only a Q&A can answer!
Hello! How the devil are you?
Very well thanks - busy!
It's the question everyone hates, but could you illuminate our readers with a little bit about your music and your influences?
We have been experimenting with fusing organic and electro sounds, trying to create something that will change your mood after listening. We take influence from bands like Jai paul, Son Lux, and Tom Waits. We try to let the music we listen to influence us subliminally, so when we write, it will be a reflection on how we feel or what has inspired us that day.
What's your song-writing / creative process like?
We find it quite spontaneous. We try not to over analyze anything too much before creating. It normally starts with a vibe, then a vocal idea or concept, then it's just a case of the music and the vocals bouncing off of each other for a while until it starts to make sense. We're quite bad for distracting each other with stupid voices and the likes - but we get there in the end!
Easy arrived pretty much out of the blue to some good coverage across the UK. Was that planned?
Not at all. We never really intended to put it out when we did. It was our first song, so we thought, lets just put it out and see what happens . So we did!
It was nice to discover from reading the reviews that people actually get what we're trying to achieve with our music. Not to say that we feel we need validated, or maybe we do!
What could we expect to see from a live show?
Not too sure yet. It's something we are thinking about, but we are focusing more on just writing more songs in the studio. I think the nature of the songs will determine how the live shows will sound and look, so it's still early days.
What else have you got planned for the rest of 2014?
2014 is all about writing an album. We don't want an album with three singles and a bunch of filler tracks, so we're focusing hard on our sound and each song has to pass the test of - 'if I heard that, would I keep it on repeat?'
What are you listening to at the moment?
Mostly we're listening to Lilac Pin because we are always in the studio! Other than that, we're listening to Son Lux ('cause we can't get enough of them just now), Joanna Newsom, iamamiwhoami, Ambassadeurs, Milosh and some Nigerian blues we came across online.
Thanks for speaking with us, would you care to share a joke with us?
Thanks for having us! Okay, we really like Dad jokes. So…
What's brown and sticky?
A stick.
You can stop laughing now!! Haha.
