Watch: Aningaaq

There’s a scene in Alfonso Cuaron’s stunning Gravity where Sandra Bullock has a conversation through a radio. That doesn’t sound interesting, but in the context of the film, the scene is up there with some of the most affecting and emotionally resonant moments in cinema this year. What is being said on the other side was a complete mystery, until this short film surfaced a couple of weeks ago.

Directed by Jonas Cuaron, son of Alfonso, the short is an achingly beautiful, poignant portrayal of the other end of that conversation. It’s clear that Cuaron Jr. takes a few directorial cues from his father, with long, patient shots that dwell on environment and serve to enhance the sheer beauty of its location. People who have seen Gravity will no doubt be surprised at just what is going on here, making it all the more memorable and a worthy companion piece to one of the films of the year. Even for those who haven’t seen Gravity, it’s still an expertly tight piece of filmmaking more than capable of standing up on its own two feet. Watch below:
