Walking to the Grocery Store

After spending a week in Manhattan recently I was reminded of how much I love being able to walk to places... not only to parks, trails and entertainment but also for basic needs like groceries.

Yesterday morning my husband and I walked in the rain to pick up a few things at Byerly's, which is about a 1/2 mile from our place. Being in a location where we can walk to things is something that greatly contributes to how much we love living where we do.

At my open house yesterday afternoon I was chatting with a woman who is in the process of figuring out where she wants to live for the next stage of her life. She also talked about wanting to be able to walk places. This desire for a personal connection to community is a theme I hear over and over again, especially from Baby Boomers and first-time homebuyers.

Finding the right place for you is a process that involves finding not only the right home but also the right location. Don't forget that when you buy a home you are also buying into a community. The location and community where you live is something you can't change so it is important that it fits you and your lifestyle.

It is also important that the home you buy fits the way you live, but if the basic structure and space are there you can make changes to make it a better fit for you. There is nothing you can do to change its location and community. That's why the mantra that the three most important things in real estate are location, location and location is so true.
