Walk of the Week

By Lwblog @londonwalks

Every Sunday we’ll pluck just one walk from the vast London Walks repertoire and put it center stage.

You can check out the full schedule at www.walks.com.

But if you only take one walking tour this week, why not make it…

LONDON & THE FIRST WORLD WAR
2.30 pm on Tuesdays from St. James's Park Tube Broadway/Westminster Abbey exit
"The Great War of 1914-1918 lies like a band of scorched earth dividing that time from ours" (Barbara Tuchman). "The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime" (Sir Edward Grey, British Foreign Secretary, as he looked from a Foreign Office window at the sunset over St. James's Park on August 3rd, 1914). This walk goes back there. To that window across from St. James's Park. To Grey's house. To where other main actors lived. To where they strove. And soul-searched. To where the men who died – that ghostly column – marches on and on. To the literal* scars that London bears to this day. And the figurative scars. The memorials – some of them almost hidden, all of them poignant – scattered like poppy petals across London. Connecting the dots the way they do, Rex, Kim and David R. limn the apocalypse that shaped our world. More... *shrapnel damage
London & the First World War walk takes place every Tuesday at 2.30 pm
Meet Rex or Kim or David R. on the corner* just outside the exit of St. James's Park Tube   *opposite 40 Broadway
