Volunteering with the Kids at the Animal Care Services of San Antonio

By Michelle Hernandez @Familylovesa
I've talked before about volunteer opportunities that are available for families in San Antonio, and now, I can share with you that we actually do them! We recently completed the process and are now registered volunteers for Animal Care Services of San Antonio. We attended the orientation and completed our first task: helping in the prep for a block walk.
Here are the steps if you are interested in doing the same. Children have to be age 8 or older and must volunteer with a parent.

REGISTER

You can register online or submit your application to the Volunteer Coordinator. Don't forget to submit a separate application for your children.

ORIENTATION

Next, you'll get an email to attend the orientation. Orientation is held at the ACS location and you also get the chance to visit the animals. You really learn a great amount of information about approaching animals, animal laws and the status of animal control in our city.
Don't forget to wear your doggie headband, too!

WORK

Next, you just get to work! Volunteering with the ACS of San Antonio is so easy and done on your own terms. Browse the calendar for the areas of need that you are able to work in and sign up on your own time.
We recently signed up to help with the prep work for a block walk. Families can also participate in Block Walks, Newspaper Pick Ups and more. There are always different opportunities that arise, so see what work best for you. This worked for us. And of course, we took a walk around the kennels before we left.  This city is a big, big world for these little ones. Volunteering makes them feel that they can be a major part of it!
Plus, it feels good!
We hope you get a chance to do the same. And if your children love animals, volunteering with ACS is the way to go!
