Virtual Show House-Day 4- Master Bedroom

 Hello and thanks for returning for Day 4 of the Virtual Show House. I am sure that you ahve been inspired by my talented guests so far but Stefan of Architect Design is here today and he brings a viewpoint that is fascinating, that of an architect. His stylish eye and breadth of knowledge are a real treat.
Hi everyone, I was happy when Kerry asked me to be a part of her showhouse as this is a genre that architects rarely get to participate in!I loved the house she chose and based a lot of my decisions on the architecture and what I could guess about the style of the owners. I thought it was a beautiful old Georgian house that a young family had moved into and modernized –you know –given it a clean lined edge. I get that from the front door, simple treatment of the house and the stylized garden. Lets start with the architecture.

I designed a 15’ wide x 18’ long bedroom which is a good size without feeling cavernous. I flanked a bed wall with antique mirrored doors which go to his and her separate baths and dressing rooms, painted the same trim/wall color.The entry into the room is in a niche which faces onto the window wall. The symmetry of the plan matches the symmetry of the house.

I wanted the master bedroom to be a calm, luxurious and cozy space; Luxe, Calme et Volupte were the theme thanks to Baudelaire. I chose Donald Kaufman paint color DKC-21 to cover both the walls and trim; a beautiful camel that reminds me of how cashmere feels.

The ceiling is Donald Kaufman DKC-24, a soft white with the barest touch of blue.

 I chose his paints because they are a full pigment paint and react with the light and space like no other. I felt the room needed a statement piece, something that relates to the age of the house. I found this

amazing Gothic Revival armoire with a lengthy history (built for the White House!) on 1st dibs from M.S. Rau Antiques. I loved the unique lines and the beautiful warm rosewood.I wanted the bedroom to be clear of clutter and an armoire is the perfect place to hide everything (tvs, books, clothes and such). I then hunted for a bed that would be clean and modern but relate back to the armoire. I found just that in this Danish modern bed also made of warm rosewood on 1st dibs from “by design modern”.

I dressed it in crisp white Porthault sheets (my personal favorite) with a duvet and shams from Sferra in Paprika. I draped the windows with curtains in an identical shade of camel to the walls in luxurious cashmere, up to the crown of course with brass curtain hardware. I also draped the back wall of the bed in the same cashmere (this is a fantasy showhouse, remember – no moths or budget!). Going with these clean lines, I chose classic Barcelona chairs and stool by Mies van der Rohe in white leather to float in the room.
I didn’t want to clutter the room with lots of art but chose 2 nudes in a deco style from the 1st dibs Tyler Galleries which I stacked between the windows.

They bring an edge to the room.I lit the art with brass Annette picture lights from Ralph Lauren Home.
I chose the matching RL Annette brass swinging sconces for bedside lamps as they wouldn’t clutter the top of the small built-in nightstands. I have them poking through the cashmere curtains.
The room would be lit with discrete recessed lighting but chose the RE Flush Mount by Suzanne Kasler for Circa lighting as the crowning touch. I hope you enjoyed my room and many thanks to Kerry for setting up this online showhouse with some of my favorite bloggers!
