Vintage Nikes

Summer is a time for lazing out on the porch, drinking beers, and wearing sneakers. Back in 2011, the Japanese menswear magazine Lightening had a special issue dedicated to vintage Nikes – specifically those made between the years of 1971 and 1980. The issue covered everything from vintage basketball shoes to running sneakers, as well t-shirts, bags, and even campaign materials. Pictured here are scans from their section on tennis shoes, which includes a number of great shots of Nike’s made-in-Japan Wimbledons (which didn’t actually have anything to do with the Wimbledon, except that John McEnroe wore them to the event – and threw many temper tantrums in them). Front of the section also has a great shot of a tennis bag made for the 1972 Olympics in Munich, which might be one of the coolest sports bags I’ve seen in a while.
