We last saw Marshall Allman (Tommy Mickens) as Sam Merlotte’s (Sam Trammell) troubled brother in True Blood. Now he’s taken on another dramatic role in the film Sugar. It sees Allman take on a dramatic role intended to shed light on homelessness. Marshall’s new role takes him to Venice Beach, California where his character meets Sugar (Shenae Grimes) and makes relationships with other homeless teens. The film centers around Sugar, a 20 year-old who is dealing with the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder while living on the streets after the death of her family.  Executive producer Elliott Broidy says of the film:

“I don’t think I could dream of a more appropriate setting to screen this eye-opening film. Homelessness is an important global issue that deserves to have its day in the sun.”

Broidy has spent 15 years working with organizations such as Council of Guardians of Aviva Family and Children’s Service and through that experience has become familiar with the harsh realities children and young adults face living on the streets.Sugar is inspired by real events and features the involvement of those who have been homeless themselves both behind and in front of the camera.
