Vicky Tiel and the Wrap Dress

By Quirky Girl @QuirkyGirlz_com

It’s true that I spend most of my time designing and making jewelry to help women feel happy and beautiful. But, there are times that I feel a need to freshen up my fashion too! I have been on the search for the perfect wrap around dress for some time. I love their comfort, and they way they seem to look great on every woman. I owned one some time ago, and last year I combed the stores looking for a new one that would be perfect for me. I searched and searched and couldn’t find one that I liked, or that fit me well.
Quite by chance, I recently found one by a designer named Vicky Tiel. This was a new name to me, I guess I have been living under a rock because I soon discovered that this incredible lady is famous. This inspired me to share a little bit about her with you and then offer you some links to send you on your own journey of discovery.
Ms. Tiel is now approaching seventy years old, but is famous for designing some very popular fashions in the 1970’s. She takes credit for the mini skirt, the wrap dress, the cross-body bag, Lace pantyhose, hotpants and the mommy dress. She is known for creating beautiful fashions for Hollywood Stars and was quite chummy with Elizabeth Taylor, touting the clothing she designed for the movie “Pretty Woman” starring Julia Roberts. Ms. Tiel talks about designing clothes for Hollywood and shares many interesting tales and stories in her book ““It’s All About the Dress: What I Learned in 40 Years About Men, Women, Sex, and Fashion,” She writes candidly in her book about excess with drugs and alcohol. “Was I an addict, or just another ’60s girl who had too much fun?” she asks in her book.

I chuckled when I heard her talk about how she designs clothing so that women can catch themselves a man, but listened closely when she talked about her patterns. She is quite skilled in sculpting the dresses she designs in a way that is very figure flattering. She still occasionally she lectures at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Vicky Tiel is certainly a prominent figure in our history of fashion, and some of the designs she introduced are still popular today. She appears to be a very interesting character and if you find yourself with a little extra time, take a few minutes to read up on her. (links below) Or, a cool fall day might be a good time to curl up with her book and take a look back into the 1970’s!

Till next time,
