One of the many outdoor exhibits of the excellent Speyer Technik Museum is this former Lufthansa Viscount. First flown in 1948, and entering service in 1953, the Viscount was the world’s first turboprop-powered airliner. Lufthansa operated 11 of these in their fleet from 1958-1971. Originally named Viceroy after the viceroy of India, Lord Louis Mountbatten, the aircraft was renamed Viscount following India’s independence in 1947. The Type 810 was the third and final variant of Viscount, with higher speeds and longer range.
