A Velie Monocoupe on display at the Hiller Aviation Museum. Designed by pilot/businessman Don Luscombe, the Monocoupe pioneered the idea of a small, inexpensive, and efficient personal airplane with an enclosed cockpit. Introduced in 1928, 350 were produced in the original production run before the passing of company owner Willard Velie. Velie’s interests were sold to Allied Aviation Industries, a holding company, and later spun off into the Mono Aircraft Company.
