Vanity Redo

By Youngandcraftysisters

I went a few months ago for a few job interviews and my mom snagged this vanity off of Craigslist in the town where my interviews were. She got a great deal and we planned and planned on the best makeover for this little beauty. We are a little slow going when we do projects!

This vanity was really pretty but definitely worn. On the tabletop there were several cup rings. Mom knew she wanted to do a two toned look so we decided to do the drawer fronts and top the same color and everything else another color.

A few months ago, I helped mom redo the guest bathroom at their house. We used a chalk paint recipe on the vanity and decided to put it in an old cottage cheese container just in case we painted something else later. We decided to see how it held up after several months and it was fine after a little mixing.

For the gray part, I found a $2 can of mis-tint paint at Home Depot that was the perfect color. We knew we would be mixing up another batch of chalk paint. For our chalk paint, we used 3 parts paint, 1 part plaster of paris, and water to mixWe are all about not having to sand!

We did have a small mis-hap along the way. We taped off the sides to do the tabletop and when we peeled off the tape it pulled the paint up. In order to get it smooth without having to sand the entire tabletop, we just sanded close to the edge and re-painted. It turned out fine, thank goodness!

It turned out better than we both could have imagined! If you use chalk paint, make sure to go over the entire piece with finishing wax. Mom decided to swap out the original wooden knobs with acrylic crystal knobs from Hobby Lobby. I think it makes the piece look even better!

This piece goes perfect in their room! Now if I could just convince her to paint that paneling…
