You may know Valve for making brilliant games like Half Life and Team Fortress or for its’ digital games distribution platform, Steam. But soon, you will get to know Valve in a whole new way as the company is now prepping to take over PC gaming throne from Windows with its’ own open-source operating system, dubbed “SteamOS.”
When it comes to PC gaming, Windows is the only platform that offers the widest range of games. Although as Valve’s Gabe Newell stated earlier last year, “Windows 8 is a catastrophe for everyone in the PC space,” especially for PC gamers as it seems to lack in providing the best performance. Valve aims to fix that by offering an alternative operating system which “combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen,” as stated on the SteamOS website.

Valve aims to take on all gaming platforms including Windows, PlayStation and Xbox with this open-source operating system as they call it to be the future of PC gaming, according to GeekWire. The company has already planned to release SteamOS for free, soon. Allowing users to install it on their computers, as well as offering free-licensing to manufacturers to use SteamOS to power up their consoles and other gaming systems. Valve’s new OS will debut with it’s upcoming Steam Box gaming system. And, the OS will be open for everyone to try out soon.
