The changes followed calls from health officials who warned vacation crowds and packed rallies like the ones the United States witnessed on Memorial Day weekend would likely result in new spikes in coronavirus cases - at amid a crisis that is already raging across the country.
Already, almost half of the American states have suspended their plans to reopen, with new cases of coronavirus having reached a record number in recent weeks. City and state leaders attributed some of the increase to rallies of young groups.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now predicts that the country will see nearly 148,000 coronavirus deaths by the end of the month. So far, at least 129,676 Americans have died and more than 2.8 million have been infected, according to Johns Hopkins University.
And while many cities have taken measured approaches to celebrate July 4, the images emerging from the holiday weekend don't show that everyone takes warnings seriously.

Crowds gathered on the shores of Virginia Beach on Saturday, even after the city canceled its holiday fireworks to "help keep Virginia Beach safe from the coronavirus pandemic." CNN affiliate WAVY reported that city officials have warned residents of the additional traffic due to the holidays, adding that they expect tens of thousands of people to visit Virginia Beach.
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware saw similar scenes when beach goers chose to celebrate at the water's edge on Saturday. Earlier this week, the state governor announced that the beach bars in Delaware would be closed for the holiday weekend.
Meanwhile, in California, where many beaches in the south of the state have closed for the holiday weekend, the crowd of beaches in San Diego recalls past years. CNN affiliate KSWB said many of them were not far from the company or were not wearing masks.
"It sounds fairly regular for July 4 with certainly a lot of people," Marine Safety Lt. Rich Stropky told the branch.
In other parts of the country, crowds have gathered to continue protests that have lasted for more than a month in the United States. In Baltimore, a witness said that at least 300 people gathered around a statue of Christopher Columbus before knocking it over and throwing it in the water. In New York, more than 1,000 protesters marched on the Brooklyn Bridge as part of the July 4 Unite New York rally and march, police said.
Masks and social distancing were also features that were mostly absent from the July 4 celebration at the White House. The tables on the south lawn of the White House were somewhat spaced, with about six chairs per table.
And as people tried to beat the July heat, many gathered in the shaded areas of space, not distancing themselves at all.
34 States Record Record Increase in New Cases
Coronavirus cases are increasing in 34 statesin the past week, 12 of them registered an increase of more than 50%, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Three states - Kentucky, New Hampshire and Vermont - report a decrease in the number of cases.

Cases are stable in 13 states: Arkansas, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming.
Florida sets historic record
Florida set an all-time record for most coronavirus cases in a single day on Saturday, with a total of 11,458 new cases, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The state has now surpassed the previous record of 11,434 in one day in New York, which was recorded in mid-April.
Florida reported 18 deaths on Saturday.
Despite the rapid increase in the number of cases and the authorities' warning that Florida may be the new epicenter of the country, the governor said he had no plans to reverse his reopening measures.
In Texas, there have been 8,258 new cases of Covid-19, according to the latest data released by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). This represents the second largest number of cases reported in a day by the state. The previous record was set on July 1, when 9,308 new cases were reported.
Hospitals in at least two Texas counties have reached their maximum capacity.
In Starr County, at least two patients had to be evacuated from the area for treatment.
"The local and valley hospitals are at full capacity and have no more beds available. I urge all of our residents to take shelter on site, wear face covers, practice social distancing and AVOID GATHERINGS "said Judge Eloy Vera.
In Hidalgo County, judge Richard Cortez asked residents to take shelter there and "call 911 only if absolutely necessary".
