Unravel Me (Shatter Me #2) – Tahereh Mafi

By Bibliobeth @bibliobeth1

What’s it all about?:

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She’s finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam’s life.

What did I think?:

After the intriguing beginning to this series in the first book Shatter Me, I was looking forward to delving into the second installment to see how the story continues. Juliette, the girl with the lethal touch, is now safely ensconced in Omega Point, a hideaway for the rebel resistance against the cruel Reestablishment which govern the dystopian world. Omega Point is a secure space filled with numerous others who also possess a “gift,” who are being coached by the leader Castle so that they may develop and control their powers to be as strong as possible when the expected war finally arrives. Juliette doesn’t know much about her gift on first entering the compound as her deadly touch along with her past experiences makes her feel hateful and bitter. However, she soon finds out there may be hidden benefits to being able to destroy objects with a mere fingertip.

So, onto the love interests.. on one hand we have solid, dependable, all round good guy Adam who is hopelessly in love with Juliette and would do anything to protect here. Then we have the other hand, perhaps the darker side? Warner – cold, manipulative and intriguing, oh and ALSO hopelessly in love with Juliette! At this point in the series, Omega Point is holding Warner as a hostage in order to carry out negotiations with the evil headman of the Reestablishment who also happens to be Warner’s father, Anderson. Juliette is roped into dealing with Warner, as she is the only person he will talk with, and finds out there is a lot more to him than meets the eye. But how will this affect her relationship with Adam, especially as she is already holding a massive secret about herself and Warner already?

I’m not going to say too much more about the plot, as I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t started the series yet, and I have to admit I was somewhat sceptical after reading the first book, Shatter Me. But in reading the sequel, it has completely surpassed all my expectations (and doesn’t feel like a re-hash of X Men, which I was slightly concerned about!). Tahereh Mafi has such a beautiful way with words, and her prose is incredibly poetic and dream-like yet sharp and gutsy at the same time, which just makes it such a pleasure to read. I haven’t assigned myself to Team Adam or Team Warner yet as I’m just dying to know which way the author is going to take it in the finale, Ignite Me. I know one thing though – it’s going to be one hell of an ending if this book is anything to go by!

Would I recommend it?:

But of course!
