Unearthed After Sunset by Lauryn April @laurynapril

By Lauriej

When Greg Erickson is killed by sultry and seductive vampire Lila, he wakes up cold and alone in a wooden box. After clawing his way out, he finds himself thrust into a vampire turf war, unsure of exactly whose side he’s on and why he’s fighting. Greg discovers that it’s not easy to be human one day and hunting humans the next. While his new vampire cohorts push him to accept his newfound existence, there’s one girl from his human life he’s unable to forget.
Caroline Christensen lived a normal life once. Then her brother was killed by vampires and her family legacy as a vampire hunter was handed down to her. When she meets Greg at a bar one night, they both feel an immediate connection. Then Greg discovers Caroline’s secret and she worries he’ll never talk to her again. She soon finds out that he has a very different reason for not calling – he’s dead.
Now Greg has become Caroline’s target, but can she bring herself to kill him? Greg, however, isn’t Caroline’s only concern. The vampires are battling one another, and Caroline is determined to find out what they’re fighting over.

Song for a Scene: “Until We Bleed” by Lykke Li

When writing Unearthed after Sunset, the song “Until We Bleed” by Lykke Li was a big inspiration for me. My main character, Greg, has two love interests in this story. He has a star-crossed draw toward vampire hunter, Caroline, and a complicated relationship with the vampire that turned him, Lila. “Until We Bleed” reminded me of Greg’s relationship with Lila, especially the lines “we drink the fatal drop, then love until we bleed, then fall apart in parts.” Lila teaches Greg a lot about himself and gets him to open up in ways that he didn’t as a human, but all together their relationship is often unhealthy and I think the eerie, sad melody of “Until We Bleed” really fits them.

Here's an Excerpt from a scene with Greg and Lila:I stormed forward, grabbing the woman before me by the arms. “What did you do to me?” She laughed and I shook her, but it only made the sensuous sound that fell from her lips louder.“Tell me!”Her laugh subsided. “I made you like me.” I stopped shaking her and her red lips curved into a bloodied Cheshire grin. My hands dropped from her shoulders. I stumbled back a step, then turned and ran. This has to be some kind of sick joke, I thought, as I did my best to put distance between us. I dashed around a headstone, praying this was a nightmare. Then suddenly she stood before me again. I skidded to a stop. “How did you—”“Stop running,” she said. “You have no reason to be afraid of me…anymore.”I shook my head. She snatched my black silk tie and pulled me to her. “Come with me and I’ll explain everything.” Her lips crashed against mine, kissing me. Then, just as suddenly, she pushed me away. I fell backward and tumbled to the ground. After landing in the grass, I looked up and found her laughing again. This can’t be real.“I think we should get you cleaned up,” she said, walking away.I wiped the smeared lipstick from my face and followed her. I still felt uneasy, but I needed answers. “Who are you?” I called out.She stopped walking and turned back. “I’m Lila.”
