Ukraine: All Bus Passengers Held Hostage Freed

(Kiev) All the passengers of a bus taken hostage on Tuesday by a gunman in Lutsk, western Ukraine, have been released, Ukrainian police said in the evening.

“All the hostages are free! Deputy Interior Minister Anton Guerashchenko said on Facebook.

The Ukrainian authorities first reported about 20 passengers being taken hostage.

But the Ukrainian security services (SBU) clarified after the successful liberation operation that there were 15.

The assailant first freed three hostages: an elderly woman, a teenager and a young pregnant woman, according to police.

The remaining “thirteen hostages” were then released following a special forces and police operation, according to an SBU statement.

The hostage taker surrendered to the police, a Ukrainian police source told AFP.
