Story: Uglies starts by taking us to a world where scientists have created the perfect solution for human problems. On somebody’s 16th birthday, they go through a procedure which makes them completely perfect. Tally (King) sees her best friend Peris (Stokes) go through the process, which seems completely different. However, she still is counting down the days till the procedure.

This is until she meets Shay (Tju) who shows her a different level of fun, unlike anything she has seen before. However, her head gets turned toward an alternative life, away from the system. Tally finds herself in the middle of a battle between ‘the Pretties’ and ‘the Freaks’ if she is ever going to get the future she wants.

Verdict on Uglies

Uglies is an action-adventure sci-fi movie following a society which craves perfect. On their 16th birthday, they have a procedure which makes them perfect. However, one girl learns about the truth of the world and fights back against the system.

This is yet another young adult dystopian future movie. It follows the typical beat-for-beat concepts, with a few twists to try and make it feel unique. However, the miss mash of the Divergent series, The Host and the Hunger Games doesn’t do much to inspire the story. Some of the effects are terrible for the standard of movies we are involved. Nothing feels complete with effects, which look more like the early stages of completion. The story brings nothing new and the characters are the typical uninspiring figures.

Where to Watch

Uglies is available on Netflix now.

Final ThoughtsUglies is a by-the-book young adult movie, with nothing fresh.
