Ubuntu Edge: Most Innovative Smartphone Concept I’ve Seen So Far

Smartphone technology appears to be going nowhere. Apple is making the same iPhone over and over calling it next-gen each time, while Samsung make more Galaxies, than in the universe, with the same old design. In these desperate times came The Ubuntu Edge, a gadget that is innovative enough to make you get rid of all your iPhone, iPad and PC.

Ubuntu Edge features mind-blowing specs and features including multi-core CPU, 4GB RAM, 128GB of storage, 4.5in Sapphire Glass display, Dual-LTE connectivity and more. But, those aren’t what makes this device unique. The Ubuntu Edge Dual-boots both Android and Ubuntu OS, allowing users to choose from either Android or Ubuntu mobile. Also, if you dock the Ubuntu Edge into a monitor the device will boot into Ubuntu Desktop, allowing you to use the device as a PC. How awesome is that? When talking about design, Ubuntu Edge is unbelievably beautiful and goes well along with its’ name. The body of the device gets crafted by a single piece of textured metal with something way tougher than glass for the display: pure sapphire crystal. Ubuntu Edge is not just a smartphone with an edgy design, it’s the future.

With this brilliant idea, the maker of Ubuntu, Canonical wanted to collect some cash to invest in this device and push it to production. So, they turned to crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, hoping to hit a record breaking goal of $32 million. Thanks to a lot of folks who shouted “Shut up and take my money!”, the campaign has managed collect over $8 million after 15 days. However it only has 15 more days to collect another $21 million and hit the goal, which at this point seems to be an impossible task.

Even though this concept device may never make it to production, Ubuntu Edge gave us hope that the future of mobile technology can go beyond an iPhone or an one eyed Google Glass. Just as Cnet writers say ” the project has already succeeded by illustrating support on all sides for the next leap in mobile technology”.
